PP60 is a black woven polypropylene geotextile membrane made from slit-film flat tape in a plain weave. Tensile strength is 60kN/m in both the machine direction (MD) and cross machine direction (CD), with elongation at break of 15% or less (BS EN ISO 10319). It is the heavy grade for haul roads, working platforms and hardstandings over weak subgrade, where a lighter woven geotextile would be under-specified.

  • Tensile strength 60kN/m in MD and CD, elongation 15% or less (BS EN ISO 10319)
  • CBR puncture resistance of at least 3.5kN (BS EN ISO 12236) against angular stone fill
  • Water permeability of at least 15 l/m²/s normal to the plane (BS EN ISO 11058), O90 of 0.30 to 0.50mm (BS EN ISO 12956)
  • More than 70% strength retained after 500 hours of weathering (BS EN 12224), resistant to pH 2 to 13, -30°C to +100°C
  • 5.2m x 100m roll covering 520m², approx. 55kg, 76mm cardboard core, approx. 350mm diameter
  • CE marked to BS EN 13249, BS EN 13250 and BS EN 13251, Declaration of Performance on request

Separation, stabilisation and filtration

Laid between the subgrade and the sub-base, the membrane stops granular fill being pushed into soft ground and fines working up into the aggregate. The balanced strength spreads load across the formation, which can reduce rutting and differential settlement subject to correct design and installation. Any reduction in aggregate thickness, and any use under railway ballast or in embankments, needs project-specific engineering design.

The fabric filters across the plane only and has no in-plane drainage. Where drainage or filtration within the plane is needed, a non-woven geotextile membrane is the right choice. For smaller areas, lighter woven geotextile membranes are available in 4.5m and 2.25m widths.

Installation

  1. Prepare the subgrade by removing large stones, stumps, sharp objects and standing water.
  2. Unroll along the direction of construction traffic.
  3. Overlap adjacent rolls by 300mm where CBR is above 3%, and by 500mm where CBR is 1 to 3%. Below 1% CBR, sew or weld the seams and contact the sales team or the project designer.
  4. Pin overlaps with U-shaped steel pins at 1.5m centres if required.
  5. Tip fill from one end and spread forward. Do not drive on the exposed fabric or drag fill across it.
  6. Place at least 150mm of granular cover before trafficking.

Allow approx. 2.1 rolls per 1000m², which includes a 10% lap allowance. Store rolls horizontally in their packaging, no more than three high, and cover the fabric within 30 days of exposure.

Typical uses

Haul roads and temporary site access, piling platforms, crane pads, laydown areas, storage yards and car parks over soft or variable ground. It also wraps stone-filled drainage trenches, forms a base layer under rip rap, gabions and concrete mattresses, and is used at the base of low embankments over soft ground, subject to an engineer's design.

What overlap does PP60 need?

The minimum overlap depends on subgrade CBR: 300mm above 3%, 500mm from 1 to 3%. Below 1% CBR the seams should be sewn or welded, and the sales team or project designer can advise.

Can plant drive directly on the membrane?

No. Fill is tipped from one end and spread forward, with at least 150mm of granular cover in place before trafficking. The project design may call for more.

Does PP60 provide drainage?

Water passes through the fabric, but there is no flow within its plane. It can wrap stone-filled drainage trenches to hold back fines. For lateral drainage, use a non-woven geotextile membrane.

Can the aggregate thickness be reduced?

Only where a project-specific engineering design supports it. The same applies to embankments and railway use.

How long can the roll stay uncovered?

Install and cover within 30 days of exposure. Longer exposure reduces the mechanical properties, so cover with a protective layer or use a UV-rated geotextile.
