The Dura-Base composite ground protection mat is a single-piece HDPE mat measuring 2440 x 4270 x 102mm (8 x 14ft) and weighing 454kg. It spreads wheel and track loads across the mat area to protect the surface and subgrade, subject to ground conditions. It is used to form temporary roadways, access routes and working platforms over soft, uneven or sensitive ground.

The mat is compression-moulded from high-density polyethylene and has a compressive strength of 40kg/cm² (600psi). Each mat gives 8.45m² of usable surface once laid. Both faces can be used, so the mat can be turned over when one side shows wear.

  • Size: 2440 x 4270 x 102mm (8 x 14ft), 8.45m² usable surface
  • Weight: 454kg, so mechanical lifting equipment is needed to move and lay it
  • Compressive strength: 40kg/cm² (600psi)
  • Temperature range: -34.4°C to +82°C (intermittent)
  • Reversible, with two usable faces
  • Compatible with Dura-Base turning and half mats

Construction and surface

Because the mat is moulded as one solid piece, there are no bolted or bonded layers to separate in service. The surface is non-permeable and non-absorbent, so it can be washed down and decontaminated between sites. This limits the transfer of soil and invasive plant material when mats are moved from one location to another, which matters on sensitive or controlled sites.

Choosing between weights and thicknesses

The lighter Dura-Base (Light) 800 series mat has the same footprint and compressive strength at 397kg, which can help where transport weight per load or lifting capacity on site is limited. For lighter traffic, a 3000 x 2500 x 40mm track mat covers a similar area with a thinner section. No tonnes rating is stated for this mat. Working platforms for heavy plant are temporary works, so layouts should be checked with your temporary works coordinator.

Typical uses

The Dura-Base mat is used for temporary roads and access routes on construction and infrastructure projects, for utility and pipeline working strips, for site compounds and laydown areas, and for industrial sites where soft ground or sensitive surfaces need protecting from vehicles and plant.

Does the Dura-Base mat have a tonnes load rating?

No tonnes rating is stated. The published strength figure is a compressive strength of 40kg/cm² (600psi). What the mat carries in use depends on ground conditions, so confirm plant types and layout with your temporary works coordinator before heavy vehicles use it.

How is a 454kg mat handled on site?

It needs mechanical lifting equipment such as an excavator or telehandler fitted for the job. It cannot be moved by hand. The lighter 397kg Dura-Base (Light) 800 series mat has the same footprint if lifting capacity is a concern.

Can the mat be cleaned between sites?

Yes. The surface is non-permeable and non-absorbent, so it can be washed down before the mat moves to another location. This helps limit the transfer of soil and invasive plant material.

Can both sides of the mat be used?

Yes. The mat is reversible. Turning it over when one face wears extends its service life.

Does the mat protect the ground or strengthen it?

It protects the surface and subgrade by spreading loads over the mat area. It does not reinforce or improve the ground beneath, so very soft areas still need assessing before traffic is allowed on.
