Why Choose the Tuff Tread

The Tuff Tread is manufactured using the materials HDPE & PVC. Both materials are widely available thermoplastics that can be used to manufacture products in a variety of ways. There are many manufacturing processes for both HDPE and PVC. They are both perfect materials for high production volumes.

The materials used in the manufacturing of the Tuff Tread are 100% recyclable which reduces the risk of products ending up in landfills. This means that each Tuff Tread when recycled, can be used to manufacture new products, cone bases, and even a new skirt for a new Tuff Tread.

Both materials used have a high strength-to-density ratio. They are proven to last longer than GRP products. As well as this, the materials do not splinter, nor pose a threat when exposed to skin contact. Maintenance of them is easy, and they can be wiped or washed clean if required.

The majority of Trench Covers on the market are currently manufactured from GRP. GRP is composed of very fine strands of glass fibre that are woven to form a flexible fabric that is yellow and red and mixed with a polyester resin. The manufacturing process of GRP is a laborious one, which produces harmful fumes which must be avoided.

Existing GRP Trench Covers can break, and fracture easily, and therefore must be replaced regularly. It is extremely difficult to recycle the material GRP, and due to this, most GRP products end up in landfills at their end of life.

GRP contains very fine strands of glass, of which make the material a severe irritant risk when in contact with human skin, and it is therefore recommended that gloves must be worn. As well as this, GRP has been studied and likened to the material asbestos, which can cause serious and fatal illnesses. When GRP breaks, there is a potential for the glass fibres to become airborne, which poses a serious risk to existing respiratory problems like asthma or bronchitis.

Testing 

Concentrated load tests were carried out in accordance with the criteria of the HAUC Advice Note No. 2018/01. 

The Tuff Tread was placed unbolted over a trench span of 700mm. Using calibrated 25 kgs barbells located onto a pole with a bottom 250mm disc. Weight loading was applied onto the board and measured at intervals of 100 kgs.

When loaded with 400 kgs, the board should not deflect more than 5% of the maximum allowable span over the design life of the board. The ultimate failure load should not be less than 800 kg.

All tests concluded that the Tuff Tread conformed to all current legislation.
