Wildlife Protection Systems
At HERMEQ, we have a range of Wildlife Fence and Tunnel Systems available to protect amphibians, reptiles and small animals from hazardous areas in accordance with the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981, Conservation Regulations 1994 and E.C. Habitats & Species Directive – includes permanent guidance fences, road tunnels and stop grids.
Every year thousands of amphibians are killed by cars throughout the country on roads as they encroach on urban developments, construction sites and industrial activities. Our Wildlife Protection Systems have been designed to sustain wildlife habitats.
Amphibian Guide Fence
This fence panel is constructed from 100% recycled plastic acting as a barrier to amphibians approaching hazardous areas and roads to help guide them safely to tunnel road crossings.
The fence's curved shape prevents amphibians climbing over from the protected side and makes sure that animals gaining access onto the road won't be trapped by the fence – this means they can climb over the curve and drop safely onto the other side.
Amphibian Tunnels
Amphibian Tunnels come with either a slotted upper surface or blind upper surface and are installed either within your road structure flush with the road surface or near the surface within the road structure.
A slotted upper surface is used in instances where there are problematic terrain conditions such as ditches on one of both sides of the road. This solution permits a minimum crossing distance, simple entrance areas at road gutter level, optimum climatic conditions due to water and air ingress and optimum adaptation of temperature to the surrounding ambient conditions.
A blind upper surface has a closed top face its high load-bearing capability means it can be installed with a minimum depth of cover. This system is typically installed in areas adjacent to the roadway such as verge areas. Special installation depths will allow for the elevation to be adjusted to terrain level. When constructed properly, the system keeps the length of the crossing to a minimum and ensures an uncomplicated entranceway area at road gutter level and optimum climatic conditions inside the tunnel. This is essential for road construction and amphibian protection.
Tunnel Entrance
Tunnel Entrances form a continuous transition between the Amphibian Guide Fence and Tunnel – its polymer concrete construction will provide a smooth transition. Guide Fences will seamlessly butt up against the entranceway and enable movement due to freezing or thawing without resulting in displacement or cracking.
Stop Grid
Stop Grids are used in side roads and approach areas to form a barrier system for amphibian guidance and traffic safety.
Wildlife Kerb
Used as a safer alternative to traditional road kerbing for the safety of amphibians as they can fall into gully pots and become trapped and die. These kerbs counteract this problem by providing a bypass pocket which has been set into the kerb – when installed the gully is in the middle of the Wildlife Kerb meaning the amphibian can safely pass the gully.
The kerb is 915mm long and fits into normal kerbing with minimum disruption – it also matches the standard HB2 kerb profile where gully pots are normally used.
Every year, thousands of small animals such as amphibians and reptiles are killed throughout the UK by accessing roads and encroaching on construction activities. At HERMEQ, we have a range of Wildlife Protection solutions designed to mitigate these risks.
We have Wildlife Barrier and Protection Systems which can be installed in your area to control the movement of these small creatures and also smaller complementary products like Pitfall Traps and Refuge Tiles for added wildlife protection.
